The 41-year-old Kenyan runner completed the marathon in 2:13:29, placing him 16th overall and second in the masters division.
Eliud Kipchoge chose Cape Town as the venue for the first leg in Africa – the Kenyan’s home continent.
## Why it matters for Eliud Kipchoge
Although he hasn’t officially retired from competitive running, Kipchoge says that he’s now more focused on being an ambassador for the sport than on competing for AWMM titles.
He announced his plans to run a marathon on each of the seven continents at the New York City Marathon last November.
## What comes next for Eliud Kipchoge?
Beyond Cape Town, Kipchoge has two more international marathons lined up this year, including the Porto Alegre Marathon in Brazil on Sunday 12 July.
He will also run the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday 11 October.
Eliud Kipchoge's wife, Grace Sugut, made her marathon debut in Cape Town this year, clocking 4:29:59 with her husband beside her.
The Cape Town Marathon was won by Huseydin Mohamed Esa of Ethiopia in 2:04:55, while Dera Dida Yami took home the women’s title in 2:23:18.
Eliud Kipchoge will still be remembered as one of the most dominant athletes in running history, with 11 AWMM race wins and two Olympic gold medals.
He broke the marathon world record twice and became the first person to break the two-hour barrier in 2019, running 1:59:40 in an exhibition race.
