Eliud Kipchoge will run the NYC Marathon on November 2. He's never competed in the event before.

What happened?

The New York Road Runners announced that Eliud Kipchoge and Sifan Hassan have been added to the elite field.

Why it matters for Eliud Kipchoge

Kipchoge is regarded as the best marathoner of all time, with 15 wins out of 23 marathons. He finished ninth at the Sydney Marathon on August 31 with a time of 2:08:31.

Eliud Kipchoge will not change his training significantly. He trains in Kaptagat, Kenya, which is hilly, so he feels prepared for the elevation changes in New York.

What comes next?

The NYC Marathon is on November 2. Eliud Kipchoge will face defending champion Abdi Nageeye and 2024 runner-up Evans Chebet in the men's race.

Sifan Hassan represents the Netherlands and is more concerned about the undulating terrain. She said everybody told her how hard the course is.

Eliud Kipchoge is 40 years old and has nearly exclusively competed in marathons since his debut at the 2013 Hamburg Marathon.

The men's race is headlined by Abdi Nageeye, Evans Chebet, and Benson Kipruto. In the women's division, Sifan Hassan will be challenged by Hellen Obiri, Sharon Lokedi, and Sheila Chepkirui.

Eliud Kipchoge and Sifan Hassan are at different points in their careers. Kipchoge has struggled to stay with the lead pack in recent years.

Sifan Hassan is still relatively new to the distance, but has been a force since winning her debut at the 2023 London Marathon. She won the 2023 Chicago Marathon, 2024 Olympic marathon, and last month's Sydney Marathon.

Eliud Kipchoge said running the TCS New York City Marathon has been a long-standing goal of his. He's honored to join the tens of thousands of runners who will run through the five boroughs in November.

Sifan Hassan is no stranger to a tight turnaround. At the Paris Olympics last summer, she completed an exhausting triple in nine days.

The majority of the NYC professional field was announced in August. Eliud Kipchoge will face tough competition in the men's race.

Eliud Kipchoge looks forward to the city's energy, its passionate running community, and the challenge of the iconic course.

The TCS New York City Marathon is legendary, and Sifan Hassan is thrilled to take on another Abbott World Marathon Major.

Eliud Kipchoge has never run the NYC Marathon before, but is excited to line up on November 2.
