Eliud Kipchoge will make his New York City Marathon debut on Nov. 2, after racing the Sydney Marathon on Aug. 31.
What's at stake for Eliud Kipchoge?
The 40-year-old Kenyan is the second-fastest marathoner in history with a personal best of 2:01:09 from Berlin 2022.
He has won four of the six long-standing annual World Marathon Majors — Berlin, Chicago, London and Tokyo.
Why New York City?
Kipchoge has never raced the New York City Marathon, missing just Boston and New York City among the World Marathon Majors.
“The thought of running in New York has always lived in my heart,” Kipchoge said.
What's the competition?
The New York City men’s field also includes defending champion Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands.
Eliud Kipchoge's last marathon victory was Berlin 2023, and he was 10th at the 2024 Tokyo Marathon.
He did not finish the Paris Olympic marathon and was sixth and ninth in London and Sydney this year.
What's next for Eliud Kipchoge?
This will be the first year in his marathon career that he races the 26.2-mile distance three times in one year.
Kipchoge is looking forward to experiencing the New York City Marathon, hearing the crowds, and meeting the people.
He wants to leave a long-lasting footprint in the running community.
The New York City women’s field also includes the last three race winners -- Sharon Lokedi, Hellen Obiri, and Sheila Chepkirui, all from Kenya.
Sifan Hassan, the 2024 Olympic marathon gold medalist, will also make her New York City Marathon debut.
